Those who observe Ekadashi fast should start following some of the rituals mentioned below.

  • First of all, take a bath before dawn and wear clean clothes on the day of fasting.
  • Clean the place of worship thoroughly and spread pieces of red or yellow cloth and keep an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu.
  • Offer flowers, offerings, lamps of pure desi ghee, incense sticks, fruits whole heartedly and devoutly to Lord Vishnu. While worshiping, Tulsi must be used to please Lord Vishnu.
  • This day is a ritual to worship Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore, he should be duly worshiped.
  • After this recite Vishnu Sahastranam Strota and perform Aarti.
  • Follow the fast of Aja Ekadashi by taking water and eating food. If it is not possible to maintain it, fruits can be consumed.
  • Perform Jagran or Kirtan on this fast at night.
  • On the morning of Dwadashi Tithi, after worshiping, serve food to the Brahmins and donate it.

Mythology related to Aaja Ekadashi (Pauranik Katha Aja Ekadashi ka)

The legend of Aja Ekadashi relates to the most humble and truthful king named Harishchandra, who is known for his honesty and honesty. Harishchandra is still alive in the pages of history due to its veracity.

Once, the deity planned to test his veracity, and the king dreamed that he had donated all his kingdom to sage Vishwamitra and the next day, he renounced all his kingdom to sage Vishwamitra and left. While leaving, Vishwamitra asked him to donate 500 currencies.

King Harishchandra told the sage Vishwamitra that he had donated his treasure with Raj and was left with only his wife and son. The king sold his wife, son and himself to a demon to fulfill the demand for sage Vishwamitra and the gold coins received, he gave to sage Vishwamitra.

He was separated from his son and wife and started working with the demon. The demon was held responsible for the duty of collecting money for the cremation of dead bodies at his cremation ground.

Once, the king was guarding the doors of the crematorium. Then, a woman came weeping with the corpse of her son. The woman was none other than the king’s wife and came for the cremation of her son.

Performing his duty, the king asked for money for the cremation but had nothing. Therefore, she tore her sari and gave the piece to the king for cremation.

Seeing the king’s veracity, God appeared and restored his kingdom and also brought back the life of his son. It is said that the day this incident happened, it was the day of Aja Ekadashi. That day, the king neither ate anything nor drank a drop of water with his wife. Both were blessed with Ekadashi.

Do’s and Dont’s of Aja Ekadashi Vrat (Kya karen aur kya na karen)

Do not eat gooseberry like gram / gram seeds, honey and vegetables.
Also, do not consume food for the second time on this day.
One should never eat meat on the tenth date of Aja Ekadashi.
Eating lentils (lentils) on the night of Dashami should be avoided; Which reduces the effects of fasting.
Follow the celibacy rules on the day of fasting and avoid consuming non-vegetables and alcohol items, especially on Dashami.
