A total of 24 Ekadashi falls in a year. Among these, Nirjala Ekadashi is considered to be the most parochial. It is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi because according to Maharishi Veda Vyasa, Bhimsena fasted. It is believed that by observing this Ekadashi fast, all the Ekadashi fasting in the year results. It is also called Nirjala Ekadashi because there is a practice of not drinking water from the sunrise of this day to the sunrise of Dwadashi. On this day one should remain waterless and worship Lord Vishnu. This fast attains longevity and salvation.



 

Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Puja Vidhan

Those who are not able to observe all Ekadashi fasting in the year, they must observe Nirjala Ekadashi fast. A person observing fast on this day attains virtue equal to all Ekadashi. The method (Vidhan) of this fast is as follows:

1. Before the sunrise of Dwadashi Ekadashi of this fast, water and food are not eaten.
2. On the first day of Ekadashi, after taking bath in the morning, worship Lord Vishnu. After that, while chanting the Lord, chant the mantra, Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya.
3. On this day one should listen to the story devoutly and sing devotional songs (kirtan).
4. The person who is fasting on this day should fill the pitcher (kalash) with water, cover it with a white cloth, put some sugar on it and give it to the Brahmin with some money (Dakshina). Should donate

The observance of this fast is accomplished by donating, performing virtues etc. according to religious importance, this fast results in longevity, good health and destruction of all sins.

Importance of charity on Nirjala Ekadashi

A person should donate food, water, clothes, posture, shoes, umbrella, blanket and fruits etc. during fasting of this Ekadashi. Devotees who donate a water pitcher (water kalash) on this day receive fruits on all Ekadashi of the year. By observing this Ekadashi fast, the person is freed from the sin of having food on all other Ekadashi and also gets the pious benefits of all Ekadashi. A person who devoutly observes Nirjala Ekadashi gets rid of all sins and attains salvation.

During the Mahabharata period, Bhima, the son of Pandu, asked Maharishi Veda Vyasa – O Most Respected Salutations! All the members of my family observe Ekadashi fast and ask me to do so. But I can not stay hungry, so please tell me how to get the fruits of Ekadashi without fasting.

At his request, Ved Vyas Ji said – Son! Fasting of Nirjala Ekadashi fast. On this day one has to refuse both food and water. Anyone who remains without drinking water from sunrise of Ekadashi to sunrise of Dwadashi and fasting with true devotion on this day gets the fruits of all Ekadashi in the year by observing this Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Hearing the words of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, Bhimasena fasted on Nirjala Ekadashi and was freed from all sins.
