Why is Ganges Dussehra celebrated?

According to a popular story of Ganga Dussehra, Mother Ganga lived near the feet of Lord Vishnu. Once, the sage Bhagiratha was in dire need of water to immerse the ashes of his ancestors. For this, the sage Bhagiratha performed rigorous penance to please Mother Ganga. Pleased with this act, Mother Ganga incarnated on the earth, but due to the rapid flow of water, Bhagirath could not immerse the ash properly. The goddess then revealed that this is possible only when Lord Shiva fills her in her hair and flows it into the mortal land of the earth.

Hearing this, the sage Bhagiratha meditated to relieve all suffering to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva accepted the request. He divided his hair into seven streams called Nalini, Hridini, Pavani, Sita, Chakshu, Indus and Bhagirathi. Among them, Bhagirathi became famous as Ganga. Ganga is considered a source of salvation in Hinduism. She is also known as the sister of Maa Parvati in many places. She is considered to be Shiva’s Ardhangini or Ardhangini and still lives in Shiva’s jata.
