The red cord is the most commonly used among Hindus. It can be worn by both men and women through pooja rituals. It represents Mars. We can see men and women wearing this string after a short pooja on the right and left wrists respectively. Meanwhile, married women tie it to their left hand.

The red thread symbolizes longevity and protection from enemies. Hence it is also called Rakshacharat. It is believed that wearing this will keep God’s blessing with you. It is believed that wearing it will bring happiness, health and prosperity.

Black strings are another custom worn by Hindus. It is usually found around the waist in young children. Adults are tied to the left wrist. Some people wear a special locket or necklace with it. People who practice black magic or sorcery can be seen with black strings tied around their right leg.

Tying black strings is said to keep children away from the evil eye. This keeps people away from evil spirits or unnecessary sorcery. It is believed that wearing black lace absorbs negative energy in the body and expels all kinds of pessimistic attitudes.

Saffron or orange is the color of fire, planets, the sun, and other universal elements. Saffron is considered to be the most sacred color of the Hindus. This color symbolizes the quest for light. Saffron is worn by monks who have left home in search of truth and salvation.

This color also helps to spread spirituality with the help of Jupiter. It is believed that tying saffron or orange string to people gives name, fame, power and prosperity and protects the person from evil eyes.

Yellow is the color of holiness and good health. People believe that this color is very important in auspicious moments like weddings or housewarming ceremony. Hindus also use the yellow cord as a symbol of good luck at weddings. This is done by tying three knots around the neck or wrists.
