Bhaiya Dooj , a symbol of brotherly love and affection, is celebrated two days after the sparkling festival of Diwali. Apart from ‘Raksha Bandhan’ in India, this is the second festival which is a symbol of brotherly affection. In this festival, sisters wish their brothers longevity. This festival, celebrated on the second date of Kartik month, is on 16 November 2020 this year.
Bhaiya Dooj is also known as ‘Bhratru II’. Sisters worship for the health and longevity of their brothers. In the morning, after getting retired from bathing, the sisters place their brothers on a pedestal. After that, after performing the aarti from the lamp and incense, do tilak of the brothers with roli and akshat and eat them with your hand. By doing this, the age of the brother increases and all the troubles of his life are removed. This day is considered to be of special importance to the sister’s house.
Legend of Bhaiya Dooj
Sage said the brother dooj the festival Yama Yama and his sister is the worship of Yamuna Ji specifically. According to legend, Yamraj and Yamuna were born to Lord Suryadev and his consort Chhaya. Yamuna and Yamraj had a lot of affection. The death god Yamdev is always busy in killing life. On the other hand, Yamuna continued to invite brother Yamraj to come to his house. One day, on the second date of Karthik Shukla, Yamuna committed Yamraj to come to his house.
Since Yamaraja is death god, he was well aware that no one would ever invite him to come home and Yamuna is calling him with such affection and goodwill. Yamraj thought that he had to follow this religion towards his sister. Yamuna was very happy to see Yamraj coming to her house. He took bath and worshiped and served dishes to his brother. Pleased with this hospitality of Yamuna, Yamraj asked his sister to ask for a bride.

Yamuna asked Yamraj that he should come to his house every year on the second date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. At the same time, he said that if any sister like him does tilak methodically on his brother on this day, then he should not have fear of death. Yamraj smilingly said Aastu and returned to Yamlok giving a boon to Yamuna. Since then, this tradition has continued in Hinduism till date.
